What is Group Piano?

The concept of teaching piano in groups is not a new one. In fact,
most universities around the world that offer music education use group piano as their primary method of piano instruction. However, because it is unfamiliar to most, people tend to be sceptical of it's effectiveness. Having taught group lessons for several years, I am convinced that it is the best method for teaching the basic skills needed to play the piano. While there may be the occasional "gifted" student who would benefit more from private instruction, research and my own personal experience shows that most students have much better success in a group piano setting.

Our music lab is equipped with state of the art digital pianos, each with headphones and midi disks. During a regular 45 minute lesson, each student has access to his/her own keyboard, headphones, and materials. For the first few minutes, the students use their headphones and disks to work on their music independently while the teacher rotates from student to student, monitoring their progress. During the instructional portion of the lesson, the headphones come off and the students learn the newest musical concept as a group. Using such tools as peer tutoring, music games, solo and group performance, as well as the newly added technology station, students receive quality piano lessons that are so exciting, they will beg for more!
